Summary: Leading cybersecurity professionals from various public and private enterprises across the Philippines, including members from the related government and military departments, shared their insights for strengthening cybersecurity in the Philippines, at the inaugural edition of PhilSec.

Philippines, 15th July, 2021: With an aim to promote the National Cybersecurity Plan 2022 and aid in further strengthening the cyber infrastructure of the Philippines, leading authorities from the National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-PH), Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), Armed Forces of the Philippines, UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC ) along with 700+ cybersecurity professionals took part in the inaugural edition of PhilSec 2021 held virtually on 13-14 July, 2021.

The long list of participants included CISOs, CIOs, CTOs, Heads of IT, Risk, Compliance, Fraud, Cyber Law & Forensics from various public and private enterprises along with the leading cybersecurity solution providers.

The author of the National Cybersecurity Plan 2022, Allan S Cabanlong (Former Assistant Secretary – Cybersecurity & Enabling Technologies – DICT) was also one of the leading speakers at the summit. While expressing his views on the country’s cyber strategy he mentioned, “Every national strategy should be aligned with the top-level strategy of every country, so in the Philippines we have a 12-points national agenda where in the cybersecurity plan is aligned to it”.

Zero Trust turned out to be the most popular topic during the summit, where multiple speakers spoke about its growing importance and popularity. Ajay Kumar (Director, Solutions Engineering – APJ, BeyondTrust) said, “Zero Trust, I think has taken the security world by storm, almost every organization is either exploring or it is on a journey of Zero Trust”.

The summit was also graced by super-insightful panel discussions with the best and the most experienced minds in the cybersecurity sector, who gave the most valuable industry intelligence. One of the leading panelists, Angel T. Redoble (CISO, PLDT Group) while expressing his views on the skills gap crisis in the industry stated, “There are two problems in cybersecurity right now – No. 1, only cybersecurity people are doing cybersecurity and No. 2, there are those who are into IT and Network that are doing cybersecurity but they do not have the right mindset.”

The virtual summit threw light on the most pressing cybersecurity topics like ‘The Path to Zero Trust – A Security Paradigm Shift’, ‘Security in the midst of IT/OT Convergence’, ‘Understanding the Darknet and Its Impact on Cybersecurity’, ‘Selling Breaches -The Transfer of Network Access on Criminal Forums’, and many others. Organizer and the Sales Director of Tradepass, Praveen Venu expressed, “Being in the industry of connecting people, we have realized how important it is for you all to meet one another, be it a peer, a potential customer or an existing client, thereby ensuring business continuity and growth.”
