The General Secretariat of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) welcomed the agreement between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran to resume diplomatic relations, reopen their respective embassies, among other agreements. These include the agreement to activate security collaboration and cooperation in economic, trade, investment, technical, science fields as well as in the domain of culture, sport and youth which was signed in 1998. Both countries affirmed their respect for the โ€œsovereignty of states and non-interference in their internal affairs.โ€ They also expressed their desire to solve differences through dialogue in the framework of brotherly ties and commitment to the principles and objectives of the United Nations and OIC charters as well as international instruments and norms.

OIC Secretary-General, Mr Hissein Brahim Taha, expressed the hope that this step would contribute to strengthening the pillars of peace, security and stability in the region, and that it would give a new momentum to cooperation among OIC Member States. He praised the Republic of Iraq, the Sultanate of Oman and the leadership of the People Republic of China for hosting and sponsoring the talks between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran thus enabling their success.
