Most countries require car owners to have motor insurance. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is no different; specifically, car owners are compelled to have third-party liability car insurance in the KSA.

Motor insurance is not one-size-fits-all, and car insurance requirements vary from country to country. Some jurisdictions require comprehensive motor insurance coverage, while others require only third-party liability insurance.

Comprehensive Motor Insurance: All-Around Protection

Comprehensive motor insurance is what it says: an all-inclusive plan (or as close to all-inclusive as motor insurance policies could get). It’s the gold standard — designed to shield you, your car, and others if the unexpected happens. It doesn’t matter who’s driving or who’s at fault. Comprehensive car insurance lets you cover all the bases.

Comprehensive car insurance plans typically provide the following coverage:

  1. Personal Accident

You’ve been in an accident; you’re shaken and maybe injured. A stack of medical bills will certainly not put you in a good mood. However, if you have at least personal accident coverage for you and your passengers, you’ll have one less thing (i.e., medical expenses) to worry about.

Personal accident insurance is protection for you and your passengers, paying a benefit in case of injuries, disability, or even death resulting from vehicular accidents. It covers medical expenses, so you can focus on recovery, not on your finances. This coverage is especially critical for frequent travelers and families.

2. Third-Party Liability

Accidents dent cars and drain bank accounts. Ramming your car into another person’s fence or vehicle, or worse, causing injuries, is not something you want to think about. Even so, it’s better if you’re prepared if it happens.

This is what third-party liability coverage does. It pays for the costs incurred if you’re legally responsible for injuries, property damage, or material losses sustained by another person (i.e., a third party). It provides significant benefits (millions of riyals) to protect you from the financial consequences of injuring others and damaging the government’s or other people’s property.

3. Vehicle Theft

Losing your car to theft is stressful enough. With vehicle theft protection, you can be compensated if someone steals your car, so you will not suffer significant losses. If your vehicle is brand-new, make sure you have this insurance coverage.

4. Own Damage

Did you hit the gate on your way out, denting and scraping your body paint? If you have own-damage protection, you don’t have to worry about the cost of repairs. A reckless driver could back into you, or a branch could smash your windshield — it doesn’t matter how the damage happened. Your insurer will foot your car repair bills if you have own-damage coverage.

5. Natural Disasters

Torrential rains could suddenly flood the streets, leaving your car waterlogged, or an earthquake could squash your car under a wall or post. Natural disaster protection protects you from damages resulting from force majeure events.

6. Fire Hazards

Cars can catch on fire. It’s not as frequent as the content creators on YouTube would like you to believe, but it’s not impossible, either. If it happens — your car catches fire from faulty electrical wiring or a blaze nearby — fire hazard coverage allows you to claim due compensation for repairs or replacement.

Who Should Consider Comprehensive Insurance?

Comprehensive care insurance is for anyone who hates surprises—at least the wrong kind. It’s a must for owners of brand-new cars and premium rides, people who drive in congested or risky areas, or those who simply value peace of mind. If you’ve got a lot riding on your vehicle (pun intended), this one’s for you.

Add-Ons: Customizing Your Coverage

Some people love to dot their i’s and cross their t’s more than others. If you’re one of them, you’ll appreciate the extra protection offered by these add-ons.

  1. Roadside Assistance

Have you ever been stuck on the highway with a flat tire, dead battery, or empty fuel tank, with no gasoline station or automotive repair shop in sight? You probably wished you had roadside assistance then.

Don’t ever be caught in a similar situation again. Get help with towing, jump-starting, or emergency fuel delivery when and where you need it with roadside assistance coverage.

2. Geographical Extension

If you enjoy traveling cross-country, get geographical extension protection. This add-on extends your protection abroad, so you can drive from Saudi Arabia to Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, or the United Arab Emirates without worrying about car insurance.

3. Car Replacement

After an accident, your car will likely be out of commission for repairs. That’s not a problem with the car replacement benefit. While your car is in the shop, you can file a request for a vehicle replacement, ensuring your routine is uninterrupted and you can continue enjoying the use of a vehicle for work and family duties.

Third-Party Liability Insurance

Most countries require at least third-party liability insurance. This is part and parcel of comprehensive motor insurance policies, but you can get it on its own.

If your only goal is to ensure compliance with government regulations and protect your finances against third-party claims in the event of a vehicular accident, third-party liability insurance is for you. It’s a practical option if you drive an older car or are on a tight budget; just add personal accident coverage to protect yourself and your passengers, too.

Pick Your Car Insurance Coverage

Different car insurance plans offer distinct levels of coverage and protection. Before you talk to an insurance company in the KSA, clarify your insurance needs. This way, you can get the right level of protection and spend only on the coverage you actually need..
