The business landscape is going through continuous change, which means that there are constantly new challenges arising in HR. This can make life challenging for those in HR as there are many issues that need to be handled efficiently and with care to keep the business running smoothly and keep employees happy. This is particularly true since the COVID-19 pandemic, which has forever changed the way in which people work. There have also been many tech developments, shifting expectations, and new trends that have emerged to create new challenges. So, what are some of the biggest challenges in HR in 2024?

Hybrid Work Models

As mentioned in the intro, the pandemic changed a lot about the way in which people work. The rise of remote and hybrid work has been the most notable, with most businesses adopting at least a hybrid model these days to provide staff with flexibility. While there are benefits to this, it can create challenges for HR. It can be challenging to ensure that remote workers are engaged and productive, meaning that HR must develop strategies to keep staff happy and engaged at work. This also means making sure that the right remote tools and technologies are available for staff.

Employee Well-Being

Similarly, employee well-being has become a larger issue in recent years. The pandemic, economic downturn, the rise of automation, and other factors have taken their toll. This means that many workers have been suffering from burnout and/or mental health issues, so HR needs to find ways to support staff. This can include mental health support, mental health days off, and wellness programs.

Talent Retention

Another significant challenge that has arisen in recent years has been talent retention. The Great Resignation was a major trend that emerged during the pandemic when many people became disillusioned with their careers and decided to make a change. This was also due to the rise of remote work, which gave people more options when it came to work. HR needs to develop effective retention strategies to keep staff happy at work, which could involve career development opportunities, flexible working, and competitive compensation.

Employment Contracts

These days, businesses often have various types of employment contracts that need to be developed. This can include permanent contracts for full and part-time staff as well as fixed-term contracts and casual/zero-hours contracts. It is vital you have the right contract in place for each staff member to be compliant with the law, which is why it is best to seek the advice of experts who can help with employment contracts. This will ensure that all of your contracts are compliant and comprehensive.

Skills Gap

Many businesses are finding that there is a significant Skills gap that can hold them back from achieving higher levels of success. This is due to the rapid pace of technological developments, which can make it hard for businesses to keep pace. This is why HR needs to provide opportunities for employees to upskill and develop new skills, as well as cast a wide net when it comes to recruiting. It is also intelligent to anticipate future skill requirements for the business so that you can start preparing the workforce accordingly.

Regulatory Changes

Every industry is going through continuous change when it comes to labor laws and regulations, which is a constant challenge for HR. It is vital that you remain compliant at all times, which is why HR professionals need to stay abreast of all local, national, and international laws and make sure that company policies are adapted as needed.

Tech Integration

Tech can be used to boost the HR department in any way, but implementing these tools and technologies is a challenge in itself. AI-driven recruitment tools and HR management systems can help to streamline many time-consuming HR processes, but implementing these technologies can be disruptive. Therefore, it is important to carefully plan how you will implement these technologies, avoid changing too much at once, and provide ongoing training and support to HR staff.

These are a few of the main challenges that every HR department faces in 2024. It has been a challenging few years for HR professionals because the business landscape has changed so much and in so many ways. With the pandemic, economic downtime, tech developments, and changing work attitudes, HR has had a lot to manage in recent times. By knowing how to manage the above challenges, HR professionals can keep the business running smoothly and keep staff happy and engaged at work.
