Finland has recently unveiled proudly insights regarding participating in the Dubai Expo 2020 from October 1st 2021, till March 31st 2022.

Jointly the pavilion will be alongside 100 partner firms, making the nation displaying world-class solutions from industries like natural resources and energy, ICT and digitalization, smart cities, technology, education, health, design and tourism.

The location has been named Snow Cape, or Lumi meaning Snow in Finnish. The simplistic, yet most refined Finnish design displays a fascinating tradition of the Finnish architecture roused by the white blanket of snow covering the Finnish landscape from autumn until spring, the pavilion bear a resemblance to a white, snow-covered Arabic tent.

Core theme behind Snow Cape or Lumi named Finland Pavilion

The main theme of Snow Cape and Finland’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai is ‘Sharing Future Happiness’. Finnish happiness is based on the relationship of people, nature and technology.

This profound connection is the origin of the quality of everyday Finnish life and the Finland pavilion connects this happiness by taking visitors on a journey through Finland’s key strengths; nature and sustainability, education and know-how and functionality and wellbeing.

Design inspiration

Finnish based JKMM Architects created the architectural design of Snow Cape, and Expomobilia (Switzerland) has raised the pavilion. JKMM has also comprehended the Finland pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010, and have intended a simple yet functional structure, safeguarding accessibility, openness and simple people flow remain at the core of the architectural concept.

Finnish elements and materials play momentous role in the design of the Lumi pavilion. Soft and light portico fabric will be in robust contrast to hard, brushed concrete of entrance deck. The entrance porch, spanning through the whole height of the pavilion, will be a cool intermediate space to prepare the visitor for a focused visit of the exhibition itself.

Hard, granite flooring will further lead the visitor into the central gorge, where the warmth of gently curved wooden surface will embrace the visitor.

The Central Gorge

Proposing to replicate the natural gorges found across Finland’s natural habitat, the pavilion’s Gorge offers a serene, natural space in distinction to the bustling Expo 2020 Dubai environment. It offers a shaded retreat for visitors looking to reconnect with the peaceful sounds of nature. Step inside the Gorge and feel Finland with all of your senses; take a deep breath and smell the fresh scent of wood. Bask in the natural light from above and enjoy the silence of the wooden refuge.

A Voyage via Finnish Happiness

The sense of Finnish happiness runs deeper than just pure joy. It is built upon trust and safety, a stable society, education and functionality. It is created possible by innovations in industry and society. Happiness is satisfaction and confidence in the future.

The Finnish exhibition will share an in-depth story of Finland, providing visitors with experiences and information to showcase the foundations upon which Finland’s happiness is built.

This will comprise of the continuous development and innovation, sustainable and environmentally-friendly solutions and extensive international cooperation.

Under the central theme of ‘Sharing Future Happiness’ and sub-themes of circular economy, sustainability and innovation, our Snow Cape pavilion will present the pillars of Finnish happiness by highlighting the symbiosis of people, pure nature and technology.

Visitors will be taken on a journey through Finland’s key strengths: education and know-how, functionality and well-being, and nature and sustainability.

The Snow Cape pavilion will serve as a unique platform for business and cultural connections between the UAE and Finland. Over the course of six months, the pavilion will host events by partner companies and industry leaders. Several thematic days, VIP events and special celebrations, such as Finland’s National Day and Christmas with Santa Claus all the way from Lapland, will take place.

In addition, we will be working with other Nordic pavilions to promote the international conversation surrounding circular economy solutions.

The Finnish pavilion presents globally leading clean technologies, a circular economy with sustainable use of resources, sustainable energy and digital solutions, mobile communications, machinery, education, health and well-being, travel and Finnish design.
