Abu Dhabi, UAE – 5 July 2021: During 2021, the Federal Tax Authority held 3 interactive virtual sessions as part of the ‘Maskani’ campaign implemented by the Authority. These were carried out with the aim of spreading tax awareness regarding the procedures for citizens to recover VAT paid for the construction of their new homes through the e-services portal on the Authority’s website, which is characterized by the ease and speed of implementing the procedures.

The Authority explained in a press release issued today that the ‘Maskani’ awareness sessions were held during the first six months of this year, with the participation of a large number of citizens concerned with recovering VAT on building their new homes. During the sessions, the steps for refunds through the Authority’s electronic services portal were clarified. By submitting a refund request with supporting documents, citizens eligible for refunds receive an email requesting them to submit the necessary documents to complete the Authority’s processing of the refund request. The refund amount is then transferred to the applicant’s bank account after their being notified of the final approval.

His Excellency Khalid Ali Al Bustani, Director-General of the Federal Tax Authority, said: “The initiative of the ‘Maskani’ campaign, recently launched by the Authority, comes within the framework of the Authority’s plans to introduce all segments of society, especially citizens, to the facilitated electronic services provided by the Authority, including the electronic platform for citizens to recover the VAT paid by them when building their new homes. The platform is characterized by the ease and clarity of its procedures which are carried out according to the latest standards to ensure efficiency and speed of performance.”

His Excellency added: “The launch of the ‘Maskani’ campaign came as part of the Authority’s continuous efforts to communicate continually with businesses and groups of society members concerned with the tax system through the Authority’s specialized team, using remote visual communication techniques to spread tax awareness among citizens who are eligible to recover the Value Added Tax paid by them for building their new homes, respond to their inquiries, support them to overcome any challenges they may face, and provide them with sufficient information about the criteria and procedures for recovery.”

The Authority explained that the interactive ‘Maskani’ sessions held during the first six months of this year clarified all matters related to the criteria for submitting a request for a refund of VAT paid on the construction of newly constructed citizens’ homes, how to create an e-services account (new user), and confirming an account. The sessions also covered e-services for the applicant, creating a special refund request account, submitting a tax refund request for new housing, how to review the status of the application, who is eligible to claim a tax refund for new housing, the refundable tax and the period during which the refund request should be submitted, and the documents to be submitted with the application.

According to the data of the Federal Tax Authority, the total number of completed requests for refunds of tax incurred on building houses for UAE nationals rose to 4,835 by the end of 2020, with a total value of 336.44 million Dirhams, compared to 1,496 requests at the end of 2019 with a total value of 87 million Dirhams, with an annual growth rate of 223.2% in the number of approved applications and 286.71% in the value of tax refunds.
